State of the Internet Explained In One Giant Infographic

Samuel Axon of Mashable.com reports on a series of inforgrapics which clearly defines for us the current state of the internet.

”The focus is on exactly who uses the Internet, and how often. It breaks things down by gender, age, income level, and nationality. It even serves up average broadband speeds for both landline and mobile users at the bottom. Some of this stuff surprised us a bit — For example, desktop computers are still much more common than laptops.”

Social Search Makes for Better Shopping

Jennifer Zaino of the Semantic Web Blog writes about semantic social search engine TipTop Search, which will be building a better shopping portal. The site directs queries to Amazon and brings back specific products in the category of interest (handbags, perfumes, etc.). TipTop then pulls together ratings for key attributes such as overall quality and value for the money based on its extraction and analysis of the unstructured data for that entity culled from user reviews about it.

It is great to see consumer based commercial applications of semantic technologies being put in place.

Web 3.0 Promises Change for Libraries

Stuart starts with a comparison of earlier versions of the Web and different iterations of what 3.0 even means:

”The term ‘Web 3.0’ reflects an equally momentous change in the way we view the web. Some of the possible avenues for the future include the 3D web, the semantic web, and the real world web.”

Gordon Brown Spends £30m to Plug Britain into Semantic Web

Silicon.com reports that Britain Prime Minister Gordon Brown announced today that a new research center will be established to put ”the UK at the cutting edge of research on the semantic web.”

The center – which will be run by world wide web creator Tim Berners-Lee and web science expert professor Nigel Shadbolt – will research how the private sector could use tagged data to spot new business opportunities – such as better identifying areas of customer demand – and increase efficiencies within organizations, through semantic technologies such as XBRL.
